HW for 11/10

Peter will not be in class on 11/3, so use the time to prepare for the following week!!

On 11/10, your First Draft of your Position Paper is DUE. Use the time on 11/3 to research, write, and discuss with your group and peers.

Position paper should have three paragraphs

Paragraph One -> Background

  1. What is the problem? (summary)
  2. Why is it such a big problem? Why should we care about this?
  3. When/Where is it a problem? When/Where did it start?
  4. What effects does it have on society/the world? Who does it affect the most?
Paragraph Two -> Current Situation
  1. Who are the key players working to solve this problem (countries, NGOs, UN Organizations)?
  2. What have they done in the past to solve the problem?
  3. What are they doing now to solve the problem?
  4. Why has the problem not been solved?
Paragraph Three -> Solutions
  1. Give 3-5 solutions to solve the problem
  2. Each solution should focus on one part of the problem
  3. Each solution should be specific and practical
Remember to write in paragraph form, not make a list of answers to these questions. Write as much as you can, not as little as you can. Do not complain to Andy or make his life difficult, he is here to help out. Also, no dancing on the desks or swinging from the fans!

HW for 10/27

Give Peter a basic summary of the problem. Tell him in very simple English the basic details of the problem. (Don't just copy and paste something from Wikipedia. Use your own words. Don't write it down and read from a piece of paper!)

Background of the issue:

  1. What is the problem?
  2. When/Where did it start?
  3. What effects does it have? Who does it affect?
  4. Why is it a big problem?
Each group member should be ready to talk about this NEXT WEEK.

Research Tips

Ø Check the news first (TIME, BBC, CNN, MSNBC, Al-Jazeera, Youtube etc)
Ø Look for names (people, organizations, countries) that are often repeated
Ø Research those names and how they relate to the issue
Ø Especially focus on NGOs and UN Organizations that are dealing with the issue
Ø Start with the background of the issue:
o   What is this problem? (basic summary)
o   When/Where did it start?
o   What effects does it have?
o   Why is it a big problem?
Ø Then look at what is being done about the problem now:
o   Who are the major players?
o   What have they done before?
o   What are they doing now?
Ø Now look at what solutions should be attempted:
o   What should be done about the problem now?
o   What are some short-term solutions?
o   What are some long-term solutions?
